Sexton fit for Wasps week, but Leinster will keep assessing Conan calf issue

Senior coach Stuart Lancaster says Zane Kirchner, Dave Kearney and Sean Cronin are all back fit in time for the European knock-out stage.

LEINSTER SENIOR COACH Stuart Lancaster gave the all-clear signal that Jonathan Sexton would take a full part in training today ahead of the Champions Cup quarter-final against Wasps this Saturday.

However, after Jamie Heaslip underwent surgery on his back on Friday, Jack Conan is not a certainty to replace the Ireland vice captain for the massive Aviva Stadium match.

Conan missed Leinster’s narrow win over Cardiff Blues on Saturday with a tight calf, and today’s injury update from the eastern province says the 24-year-old will continue to be assessed this week.

Placed in the same bracket is wing Dave Kearney, though Lancaster name-checked the Louth man while highlighting the heightened competition for places that the return of Sean Cronin and Zane Kirchner would bring.

“One or two coming back in, Dave Kearney, Zane Kirchner and Sean Cronin all fit again. Competition for places is pretty intense. With Jamie Heaslip and Rob Kearney being out, that’s a bit of a blow, but competition’s pretty intense with the Irish boys back in and the boys that have been in going well.”

Josh van der Flier, Rory O’Loughlin and Isa Nacewa all started the win over the Blues and have reported no flare-ups post-match.
