FINE GAEL SENATOR Catherine Noone has backed down from her stance after suggesting that the UFC should be banned in Ireland.
Noone told The Herald that she had written to the Minister for Sport to seek his views on the biggest promotion in mixed martial arts before giving her thoughts on Tubridy on 2fm this morning.
โI do think this stuff is awful,โ she said. โI donโt claim to know the worldโs end about this stuff but I do know the basics.
โI donโt really think that itโs something we should be giving a platform to. Itโs ultra-violent, it tends to be very, very staged and itโs all about the money.
I know most things are all about the money in the commercial world but I just think itโs hideous stuff and I donโt know why we should entertain it on our shores.โ
Noone went on to admit that she had never watched a UFC fight before and revealed that her knowledge of the sport was based largely on an article written by close friend Colin Barry.
After a significant reaction to her comments on Twitter, however, Noone took to the social media site to accept that she had โjumped the gunโ โ adding that she would be open to accepting an invitation to train and educate herself about the sport.
