Big change in the Midlands as 'Cheddar' Plunkett steps down as Laois hurling boss

He had been in charge for the last four years.

THE LAOIS HURLERS are looking for a new manager with Seamus ‘Cheddar’ Plunkett stepping down.

The County Executive will meet over the next few days and then begin the search for a replacement.

Plunkett had been in charge for the last four years but it’s been a tough slog for him and the players with minimal success.

The team’s best performance came in 2015 when Plunkett masterminded a first Leinster Championship victory over near-neighbours Offaly since 1972.

Just days before, Plunkett had resigned after two players were involved in a senior club challenge match but returned in time to take his place on the sideline.

Offaly got their provincial revenge in the summer before Laois were eliminated from the qualifiers after a thumping loss to Clare.

Plunkett did win some silverware during his spell in charge and guided Laois to the National Hurling League Division 2A title in 2013.
