CORK CLAIMED THE Canon O’Brien Cup with a 2-12 to 0-13 victory over UCC at the Mardyke on Saturday afternoon.

Kieran Kingston’s side led by just two points at the break but pulled clear to begin a busy 24 hours on a winning note.

The Rebels face Kerry in the Munster senior hurling league tomorrow afternoon at Fitzgerald Stadium.

Aidan Walsh will make his 2016 bow and captains the team with Brian Lawton and Luke O’Farrell among the other established players set to be in action.

Meanwhile, NUI Galway earned their first Walsh Cup victory of the campaign with an impressive demolition of Westmeath at St Loman’s.

The Students dominated the second round clash in Mullingar and were clinical in their approach as Conor Whelan set the visitors on their way with a goal before the break.

Indeed they had raced into an unassailable 1-16 to 0-5 advantage at the break and continued to boss the contest in the second-half, scoring another 2-5 to seal an emphatic win.

NUI Galway face Galway in Duggan Park next, with that game being played on Wednesday evening.

Elsewhere, Cavan comfortably accounted for UUJ at Kingspan Breffni Park, running out 3-14 to 0-9 winners in the Dr McKenna Cup.
