50 riders were involved in the crash, which took place during the final kilometre, and while the likes of Team Sky’s Bradley Wiggins and Gerint Thomas managed to avoid it, Irish cyclist Sam Bennett wasn’t quite as lucky.

The 24-year-old, who races with Bora-Argon 18, posted two pictures showing his wounds on Instagram.
