Promising young Irish defender seals move to Stoke City

The Irish underage international adds to the growing contingent of Irish players at the Potteries.

IRELAND U18 INTERNATIONAL Ryan Sweeney has completed his move from AFC Wimbledon to Premier League side Stoke City.

The 19-year-old centre-back leaves the promoted League One side for a fee in the region of £250,000, after attracting the interest of several other Premier League clubs.

The English-born defender has signed a three-year deal at the bet365 stadium, after helping the Dons secure promotion via the play-offs last season.

Sweeney becomes the third signing of the season for the Potters, following the arrival of Joe Allen and Ramadan Sobhi earlier in the window, and becomes the sixth Irish member of Mark Hughes’ squad, joining the likes of Marc Wilson, Glenn Whelan and Jon Walters at the club.
