MANCHESTER UNITED HAD turned a corner when Ryan Giggs made his debut for the senior side.
The FA Cup win in 1990 kept Sir Alex Ferguson in his job while the following season, they finished a respectable sixth and won a European trophy for the first time since 1968.
But the team still lacked much in the way of exciting players with the notable exception of Lee Sharpe.
All of that changed on 2nd March 1991 when a skinny left-winger replaced Denis Irwin after 33 minutes of a First Division clash with Everton.

United were in the middle of both an injury crisis and three successive defeats with the likes of Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce and Mark Hughes unavailable.
They were already a goal down when Giggs was introduced and conceded a second shortly after his introduction.
Still, he provided pace and energy and went close to scoring before the break only for his compatriot Neville Southall to deny him.
In the second period, he conjured his best moment, curling in a magnificent cross that Danny Wallace somehow failed to convert with the goal at his mercy.
The United lineup that day brings back some memories:
Les Sealey, Mal Donaghy, Gary Pallister, Denis Irwin, Clayton Blackmore, Lee Martin, Darren Ferguson, Paul Ince, Brian McClair, Lee Sharpe, Danny Wallace.Subs: Ryan Giggs for Irwin, Russell Beardsmore for Martin.
Giggs had to wait until two months later for his first start though he was credited with the winning goal in a derby win over Manchester City.
By the following May, he was voted the PFA Young Player of the Year and there was no turning back.
