Many of you may remember Twitter’s introduction of flag emojis for the football World Cup in Brazil last year in order to increase the tournament’s global appeal, and the idea must have worked as a set of Rugby World Cup emojis will go live tonight on the platform.
By Tweeting #RWC2015 a selection of specially-designed rugby-themed emojis will be on rotation throughout the six weeks of the tournament. Each of the 20 nations will also have their own emoji flag on Twitter. The emoji will be in the form of a rugby ball with the national flag inside, so when Irish fans Tweet #IRE their emoji will appear.
During games, the official Rugby World Cup twitter account (@rugbyworldcup) will be inviting fans to vote for their man of the match and for the first time in a global sporting tournament the match ball will have the official tournament hashtag on it.
Fans following the quadrennial tournament are being encouraged to join the conversation on Twitter with the emojis, which will also show up when fans of each nation use a unique rallying cry, with #ShoulderToShoulder the selected phrase for Joe Schmidt’s charges.
