TV viewing figures for yesterday's game released - and France weren't the only winners on the day

The nation was glued to the box for the afternoon.

IRELAND’S HEARTBREAKING DEFEAT to France on Sunday afternoon attracted an average television audience of 1.26 million on RTÉ2.

Viewing figures for the state broadcaster’s coverage of the hugely-anticipated Euro 2016 clash have been released – and as you can imagine, they’re through the roof.

Record numbers tuned in for the round of 16 tie from Lyon with RTÉ’s coverage reaching a peak of 1.33 million, which represents an incredible market share of 84.6%.

It is the biggest programme on Irish television so far this year while last Wednesday’s memorable win over Italy isn’t far behind after recording an average audience of 1.23 million.

Additionally, 130,300 watched the action unfold on the RTÉ Player.

It brings RTÉ’s Euro 2016 coverage to a cumulative total of 2.11 million people reached.
