It’s not the first time that Keane has been linked with a move to Australia having previously been tipped to take over at Melbourne’s other club, Melbourne Victory, following his sacking by Ipswich in 2011.
Stuart Pearce, Alan Pardew and Josep Gombau, the current coach of the Australian U23 national team, are also thought to be on the shortlist drawn up by City following a consultation with former England boss Roy Hodgson.
“It’s understood that Hodgson, 69, has highlighted a fragility which he believes pervades the club,” SBS reports, leading to a manhunt for a coach who can turn the club into title challengers.
Melbourne City are owned by Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi United Group along with Manchester City and New York City.
City finished fourth in the A-League regular season before crashing out in the first round of the playoffs with defeat against Perth Glory last month.
