Keane: A lot of fans don't understand the game. Van Gaal needs 2-3 years to rebuild

The ex-Manchester United captain believes their current manager should be given a chance.

ROY KEANE WAS a guest alongside Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Ian Wright for last night’s televised FA Cup quarter-final between Manchester United and Arsenal.

After the game, a 2-1 win for the Gunners, the Ireland assistant manager was asked for this thoughts on his former club’s current situation and their manager Louis van Gaal.

“Of course he is going to be criticised as you would expect, but you’ve got to give the man a chance,” replied Keane. “He has been in the door literally two minutes.

The lads were talking about money spent but it takes time. It is literally a rebuilding job. A lot of fans don’t quite understand the game or it is to run a football club or a team as big as Man United.

“They should have given David Moyes more time but they didn’t so what are they going to do, chop and change again? Give the man a chance. Two or three years to rebuild the football club.”

“It would be a disaster (if they don’t finish in the top four),” he added. “The big problem with people at the moment at the football club, and ex-players like Phil (Neville) and Martin (Keown), they keep looking back at Man United.

“Comparing teams from five and ten years ago, they have got to look forward. Focus on the players, focus on the manager, get right behind them and give them a chance.

“I still think they have enough to get in that top four. It’s a great football club – they will bounce back.”
