IRELAND U21 INTERNATIONAL Jack Byrne believes he is still in with a chance of playing for the senior team at Euro 2016 after training with Martin O’Neill’s squad last week.
The 19-year-old is on loan at Dutch side Cambuur from Manchester City, but returned to the Ireland U21 side after a session with the senior setup. Byrne enjoyed the experience, and is now eager to continue to work his way into O’Neill and Roy Keane’s plans.
“The level of play was very high and I was quite nervous to enter the pitch alongside the big names. O’Neill and Keane gave me a few tips and made me feel at home.
“O’Neill told me to play my own game and not to be afraid to shoot. Roy Keane told me I made the right choice to join Cambuur. He said getting out of my comfort zone will help me improve as a player.”
Despite not featuring in the senior squad’s friendly double-header, Byrne has not ruled out his own chances of going to France in June.
” I felt that I was able to compete with the rest of the team,” the Dubliner claimed.
On the other hand, I’m still only 19 and the other players are the ones who secured qualification. I will keep fighting [to make it to the Euros], though. My performances with Cambuur are not going unnoticed.”
Byrne’s loan with the Eredivisie club finishes at the end of the season, and he hopes that the first-team experience gained in the Netherlands can help him break into the Manchester City first team.
“I hope to take part in pre-season at Man City next season, but new manager Pep Guardiola has not called me yet,” Byrne revealed.
