Roy Keane has leapt to the defence of Hector Moreno after Luke Shaw's leg break

Keane says Moreno made a “brilliant challenge”

HECTOR MORENO HAS been public enemy number one amongst Manchester United fans in the last couple of days, but he seems to have found an ally in the form of Irish Assistant Manager and United legend Roy Keane.

Keane has backed the Mexican defender after his tackle on Shaw which ultimately broke the left back’s leg.

Speaking on ITV’s Champions League coverage last night, Keane said that while the challenge ultimately left Shaw in hospital and out of the game for several months, it was a well executed tackle by the eventual man-of-the-match, and the initial lack of reaction from the United players supports it.

“I thought it was a brilliant challenge,” Keane said.

“I love the physical side of the game. You can always tell by player reactions and none of the United lads at the time, and players are best judges because they are nearest the tackle, didn’t react over the top thinking it was a bad challenge, obviously at the end of it.”

The Irish Assistant Manager added that injuries like Shaw’s are just part of the game.

“And when players are travelling that speed, defending like that, injuries are going to happen. I’m surprised there are not more like it. It was more of an accident at the end of with his trailing foot.”

After the game, Moreno tweeted a message to Shaw wishing him a speedy recover, having recovered from a fractured leg himself in 2014.

Shaw underwent surgery in Eindhoven, and United are yet to put a timescale on his recovery.
