Roscommon's first win of the campaign sends Cavan down, while Meath miss out on promotion

Cork drew with Down while Derry pipped Fermanagh.

ALREADY RELEGATED ROSCOMMON ensured that Cavan will be joining them in the second tier after a 1-13 to 1-10 win in Dr Hyde Park.

The teams were level at 0-8 apiece at the interval, and in-form forward Dara McVeety bagged a goal for Cavan shortly after the restart.

But Cathal Compton fired in an equaliser within a minute while scores from Thomas Corcoran and Conor Devaney helped them to victory.

A last-gasp point from a free by Jerome Johnston salvaged a 1-10 to 0-13 draw for Down against Cork in Páirc Uí Rinn this afternoon, as they secured their Division 2 status for next year.

Cork were forced to rue an inability to close out a game that saw them in front 1-6 to 0-5 at the break and 1-10 to 0-10 with ten minutes left.

But Down, whose shooting looked set to cost them as they amassed 15 wides, reeled them in with the Johnston brothers, Ryan and Jerome (2), firing over the last three points of the game.

Colm O’Neill had impressed in the first half for Cork as he struck five points, three from play.

The only goal of the game was supplied by Cork midfielder Ruairi Deane before the interval when he showed impressive composure after gathering a Paul Kerrigan delivery to sidestep Down goalkeeper Michael Cunningham and plant the ball in the net.

Kerrigan grabbed two second-half points from play for Cork but they struggled to find their range after the break.

Slowly but surely Eamonn Burns Down team reeled Cork in to grab a draw with Caolan Mooney and the Johnston brothers impressing most.

Also in Division 2, Carlus McWilliams sent over an injury-time winner to snatch victory for Derry over Fermanagh.

Fermanagh led by 0-12 to 1-5 midway during the second period, but Conor McAtamney’s second goal gave Derry life before McWilliams hit the winning score.

Meath enjoyed a comfortable 12-point win over Clare but it wasn’t enough to give them promotion to the top flight.

Graham Reilly kicked six points from play while Cillian O’Sullivan fired in a brace of goals during an entertaining contest.

Down’s draw with Cork mean that Clare held onto their Division 2 status.
