'A tsunami just hit my bank account!' McIlroy's text from caddie after $11.5m prize win

McIlroy is back in action at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai this week.

RORY MCILROY IS back in action this week at the HSBC Champions in Shanghai, his first regular tournament since winning a whopping $11.5 million at the FedEx Cup finale.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that a man of McIlroy’s wealth might not even notice a sum like that landing in his bank account — but his caddie JP Fitzgerald certainly did.

Fitzgerald, who has been caddying for McIlroy since 2008, netted a little over $1 million as his generous cut of the prize money.

“I knew it was there when JP, my caddie gave me a text and said thanks,” McIlroy told reporters in Shanghai when asked if he’d received the prize.

“I think his words were, “A tsunami just hit my bank account, so thank you very much.”

“JP got a nice percentage of that so I knew at that point it was already there.”

– An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that Fitzgerald had been McIlroy’s caddie since 1998. He has been his caddie since 2008.
