Ex-Limerick striker Gaffney helps Bristol Rovers to dramatic League One promotion

It’s been a memorable year for Rory Gaffney.

FORMER LEAGUE OF Ireland striker Rory Gaffney is celebrating promotion to League One with Bristol Rovers after joining the club in January.

The 26-year-old helped Rovers to a 2-1 victory over Dagenham and Redbridge this afternoon, which was enough to secure the third promotion spot after Accrington Stanley could only draw.

Lee Brown’s 92th minute winner sent the Memorial Stadium into raptures as Rovers achieved back-to-back promotions in the most dramatic circumstances.

Gaffney featured in 23 league games this term, scoring eight goals, after making his move from Cambridge United permanent in January.

The former Limerick and Mervue United forward spent one month on loan at Bristol before Christmas and after a short stint back with Cambridge, put pen to paper on a deal with the Pirates.

Gaffney, from Galway, has had to bide his time after making the move across the pond in late 2014.

He struggled to break into the first team at Cambridge but has grasped his chance with both hands after opting to move to Bristol in search of greater opportunities.

And he’ll now play League One football next season.
