Rory Best was quick to praise his teammates for their historic display in Chicago.

IRELAND CAPTAIN RORY Best said his side’s 40-29 victory over New Zealand was a “long time coming” after Joe Schmidt’s men created history with a sensational win over the All Blacks.

Speaking after the game to NBC, the 34-year-old said he was immensely proud of his teammates for ending the 111-year wait to beat the world champions, and that not preparing to hold on to their 17-point half-time lead was key to their triumph.

“We just talked about attacking New Zealand, we know they are a great side,” the Ulster hooker said. “And you can see how good a side they are, how much it means to our boys to have won that.

“If you give them ball, and stand off them, they are an unbelievably dangerous outfit. I couldn’t be prouder of the work we put in. It hasn’t been just the last week, the last couple weeks, it has been a long time coming,” Best continued.

“It has been a long time and it’s history made. We’re absolutely ecstatic. A marvelous performance by us.”

The Irish support made up the vast majority of the 62,300 people in Soldier Field in Chicago, and Best praised their vocal backing.

“The atmosphere here, felt like a home game to us. I suppose now, we are going to have to dye the river green for this one.”
