Ronda Rousey makes history as the UFC's first Sports Illustrated cover star

She’s slowly dragging MMA into the mainstream.

RONDA ROUSEY CONTINUES to break new ground for the sport of mixed martial arts.

Described by the magazine as ‘the world’s most dominant athlete’, the undefeated UFC women’s bantamweight champion is set to become the first Ultimate Fighting Championship athlete to feature on the cover of Sports Illustrated while being the main story as well.

Rousey, a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist in judo, will grace the cover of the 18 May edition, which goes on sale tomorrow. In February, the 28-year-old Californian became the first MMA fighter to appear in the magazine’s swimsuit issue.

Roger Huerta, a former UFC lightweight, appeared on the front of the magazine in 2007, but not as a cover model. Huerta was shown in an action shot advertising an article about the rise of MMA.

Rousey is currently promoting her autobiography, My Fight/Your Fight, and is scheduled to make the next defence of her UFC belt against Bethe Correia on 1 August.
