Ronaldo notches 30th goal of the season, but Real left frustrated as La Liga lead is cut to two points

The Portuguese superstar is the first man to reach the 30-mark in five straight seasons.

CRISTIANO RONALDO CONVERTED a penalty early in the second half of last night’s La Liga meeting with Villareal to set another goal-scoring record.

The Portuguese star has now become the first player in the history of Spanish football to notch 30 goals in five consecutive season.

Unfortunately for Ronaldo, that goal-scoring consistency did not pave the way to three points against Villareal at the Bernabeu as Gerard Moreno’s 64th minute drive forced a draw.

With Madrid’s lead at the top of La Liga now reduced to just two points, manager Carlo Ancelotti was forced to defend his substitution of playmaker Isco with 12 minutes remaining on home turf. The move prompted an angry reaction from the Madridistas in the stand, but the Italian was bullish in his own defence.

A manager is down there on the pitch to make changes, because he thinks that they are for the good of the team. If the fans don’t understand it, well I’m sorry, but I made the decision in order to give more balance to the team.”

Post-match, Real defender Pepe said it was near ‘impossible’ to break the Yellow Submarine’s defence.

“We put in a lot of crosses and they had two lines of four, so it was practically impossible to get through in the middle. We conceded a goal on a coun-terattack but that’s football. We fought and we came up against a very good team; we have to keep fighting.”

Just not literal fighting this time, eh Pepe?
