Kerry GAA stars salute Leinster schools cup winner who claimed 2014 All-Ireland minor medal

There’s plenty praise coming in for Robert Wharton’s unique sporting achievement.

AN ALL-IRELAND minor football title last September and a Leinster senior schools rugby triumph today.

It’s not a bad haul of sporting accolades in a six-month period with Kerry’s Robert Wharton achieving that remarkable feat.

Wharton is from the Renard club in South Kerry – where senior defender Killian Young also hails from – and he came on in last year’s All-Ireland minor final win over Donegal for his clubmate Brian Sugrue.

Today he was outside centre on the Cistercian College Roscrea team that won the Leinster senior schools cup for the first time with a 18-11 final success over Belvedere College at Donnybrook.

Some well-known Kerry senior football personalities were quick to praise his achievement.

While some of Wharton’s former Kerry minor teammates – who will be in action for the county’s U21 side against Cork tomorrow night – also sent best wishes.

Wharton wasn’t the only GAA star in rugby action today with former Tipperary minor Alan Tynan out-half on the Roscrea CC team.

Last year’s Dublin minor footballer Declan Monaghan was part of the Belvedere College side who lost today’s Leinster decider while Conor Fitzgerald, a 2014 Limerick minor hurler, played for Ardscoil Rís in today’s Munster final in Thomond Park.
