AN ALL-IRELAND minor football title last September and a Leinster senior schools rugby triumph today.
It’s not a bad haul of sporting accolades in a six-month period with Kerry’s Robert Wharton achieving that remarkable feat.
Wharton is from the Renard club in South Kerry – where senior defender Killian Young also hails from – and he came on in last year’s All-Ireland minor final win over Donegal for his clubmate Brian Sugrue.
Today he was outside centre on the Cistercian College Roscrea team that won the Leinster senior schools cup for the first time with a 18-11 final success over Belvedere College at Donnybrook.
Some well-known Kerry senior football personalities were quick to praise his achievement.
While some of Wharton’s former Kerry minor teammates – who will be in action for the county’s U21 side against Cork tomorrow night – also sent best wishes.
Wharton wasn’t the only GAA star in rugby action today with former Tipperary minor Alan Tynan out-half on the Roscrea CC team.
Last year’s Dublin minor footballer Declan Monaghan was part of the Belvedere College side who lost today’s Leinster decider while Conor Fitzgerald, a 2014 Limerick minor hurler, played for Ardscoil Rís in today’s Munster final in Thomond Park.
Gavin Duffy, Tommy O Donnell, Ian Madigan, Shane Horgan, Simon Zebo, there has always been Top Rugby players around who used to play Hurling and football, there’s just so many playing the games that there’s bound to be a few every year that choose rugby.
Don’t forget Gaillimh!
The rugby are a serious threat to Gaelic football as can be seen from the above article. Also look at Henshaw, Carty, the Kearneys for further evidence
It’s a chance to make a living out of playing sport. Can’t begrudge them for that
Did u play schools rugby Jon Walters
I agree and a very healthy social and lifestyle environment….train…rest…make a living….continue an education…play at a challenging level….very positive situation.
Silly – No Comparison the lads mentioned have won nothing apart from the Kearneys
Well obviously…..they’re still in school.
Hugh Carolan won an Ireland Minor with Meath as well as a Senior Cup with Blackrock in the 90′s , Not sure if it was the same year.
BTW He was also a Schoolboy Soccer Internationalist
Why did my comment on the earlier thread get deleted? Pure censorship the42!
The publicity this elitist underage competition gets represents a lot that is wrong with the class system of Irish society. And before you deleted my comment the vast majority agreed.. Let this comment stand.
