Chelsea's Robert Lewandowski chase ignites subdued transfer window

Bayern Munich have warned off the Blues.

CHELSEA HAVE LOOKED at signing Robert Lewandowski and believe there’s a glimmer of hope despite Bayern Munich’s resistance to even entertain losing their world-class forward to a Champions League rival next season.

Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Eden Hazard are some of Chelsea’s best-ever signings in the Roman Abramovich era and securing Lewandowski would be a pivotal moment in an underwhelming transfer market so far.

It’s understood that Chelsea made first contact to Lewandowski’s representatives over a month ago and any deal would likely be a club record fee, eclipsing the £50 million paid for Fernando Torres by some distance.

Any move won’t be simple and it would perhaps require Lewandowski taking on Bayern Munich to force his exit from a club that have been very firm in their response to the news of Chelsea and Manchester United’s interest.

Their statement read as follows: “Robert Lewandowski has a contract at FC Bayern which he recently has extended until 2021. FC Bayern does not have any thoughts about a transfer.

“There are no talks with other clubs and there won’t be any. If other clubs negotiate with players who have long-term contracts they risk getting sanctioned by FIFA.”

It is unusual to see a club officially come out and deny a transfer rumour around one of their players. Chelsea resisted the urge to follow this approach earlier in the season when Real Madrid publicly courted both Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois, who were being heavily linked with moves to the European champions.

Being linked with Lewandowski is good for Chelsea fans as it gives them an inspirational name that they can dream about bringing to their club. The fans have faced a tough summer so far, with no players signed and having learned that Diego Costa was told he is no longer needed at the club by Antonio Conte via text message.

Lewandowski has been a success wherever he has played. In Poland, his 68 goals in 117 games across both Znicz Pruszkow and Lech Poznan as a youngster alerted Borussia Dortmund to a unique talent.

He also earned two major honours in Poland before helping Dortmund temporarily boost the side to compete with Bayern Munich’s riches and win back-to-back league titles under Jurgen Klopp at Westfalenstadion. What was most amazing about his achievements at Dortmund was his ability to step up from the Polish league to the upper end of the Bundesliga with so little time needed to adapt.

However, his losses in both the Champions League and DFB-Pokal final in consecutive seasons to Bayern Munich suggested that he had yet to reach a club at the top of world football and he, like Mats Hummels and Mario Gotze, decided to move to his side’s biggest rivals.

Not only did Dortmund lose their star striker but they lost him on a free transfer and he has since gone on to score 77 goals in the league in his first three seasons. Sixty of those came in the last two seasons and three Bundesliga titles have been secured with Bayern’s No 9 leading from the front.

Lewandowski’s trophy cabinet is full of German footballing honours but, with a move to La Liga looking more unlikely by the year, the Premier League is the lead destination for him to go to for one last adventure at the top of the game. That must be a tempting proposition for the 28-year-old.

Moments like his four Champions League goals versus Real Madrid and his five in nine minutes against Wolfsburg are memories that will already cement his place in the folklore of German football.

For Chelsea, it is worth a go and a bid is a no-brainer. Players like him only come around once in a decade. He would be an improvement on Costa and would become the best striker in the Premier League, even by comparison to Sergio Aguero.

Romelu Lukaku remains the more likely arrival to replace Costa at Chelsea, but any glimmer of hope to secure a unique deal for one of the world’s best players must be celebrated by those who support the club.
