'Hopefully back soon stronger': Robbie Keane had an operation on his knee today

At what point do we start wrapping all of Ireland’s players in cotton wool?

ROBBIE KEANE IS the latest Ireland star to go under the knife in a bid to be fit for Euro 2016.

Ireland’s record goalscorer posted a hospital bed picture to Instagram this evening following a procedure on his right knee.

“Operation done, speedy recovery, hopefully back soon stronger,” the LA Galaxy star wrote.

Keane flew back to Dublin for the friendlies against Switzerland and Slovakia, but played no part and returned to Southern California for treatment on a mystery knee injury that had not cleared up.

Ireland boss Martin O’Neill said that Keane planned to have a “scope” to determine the severity of the problem and said the striker did not have “any real worries” about his fitness.

Keane’s operation comes on the same day that Jon Walters played down concerns about his fitness following a knee operation of his own, while goalkeeper Rob Elliot was ruled out of the Euros with a cruciate ligament injury earlier this week.
