Rio Olympics liveblog: Day 6

Keep pace with the Irish competitors in Brazil.

Olympic Breakfast: after last night's defeat for Joe Ward, these are the Irish hopes today

It hasn’t been a great week for the boxers, to put it mildly.

Joe Ward became out latest medal hope to lose last night in a poor fight. Paddy Barnes, of course, also lost in his first outing and Michael O’Reilly never got to set foot on the canvas.

Today though, Steven Donnelly squares up against Mongolia’s Byambyn Tüvshinbat in his second bout of the tournament.

It’s a busy day in store generally with Pádraig Harrington topping the bill, the hockey team hoping to get their campaign up and running at last and hopefully the rowers will get out for some air. Here’s all the details for Team Ireland today.

Chloe Magee is about to hit the court against China's Yihan Wang

The Donegal woman’s badminton singles preliminary will start at 1pm.

Sinead Jennings and Claire Lambe are next out in rowing

The duo are in the second lightweight double sculls semi final at 1pm.

The Donegal woman will be back on court on Saturday against Germany’s Karin Schnaase.

Padraig Harrington -2 through 11 holes in Rio, but...

The Dubliner has recovered from his early bogey and is just two shots off joint leaders Graham De Laet and Marcus Fraser. But he just had a nightmare on the 121th, hitting a bank and seeing his ball bounce back to a bunker.

Ireland’s second man out Seamus Power is due on the first tee at 14.47.

Ireland ready to face Canada in must-win hockey match

After three defeats in Group B, the Irish men’s hockey team are in desperate need of a win this afternoon against Canada. Three points for Craig Fulton’s men would enhance their chances of qualifying from the group, with the final game against Argentina to come on Saturday.

Tip-off is at 3pm.

GOAL! Ireland take the lead inside the first minute

What a start from Ireland! Ireland win a penalty corner from their first circle entry and Shane O’Donoghue rockets it under the roof of the net.

GOAL for Ireland as O'Donoghue scores his second

After a period of sustained Canadian pressure, Ireland strike at the other end — and it’s that man O’Donoghue again as he clinically dispatches another PC.

GOAL for Ireland as they make it 3-0

And it’s three! Peter Caruth slides in at the back post to apply the finish from a tight angle. A dream half for Craig Fulton’s men.

Canada pull a goal back

Canada’s pressure eventually tells and they pull one back. 3-1 to Ireland with six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Canada have another, and it's squeaky bum time now

7 minutes left on the clock and Canada pull another one back. Craig Fulton is anxiously pacing up and down the touchline.

GOAL for Ireland!

It’s in! Ireland somehow force it the ball home and it looks like Mitch Darling gets the final touch and surely now Ireland are safe. 3 minutes to go.

Ireland secure first Olympic hockey win in 108 years

A big, big result. The Green Machine hold on for a 4-2 win over Canada to keep their hopes of qualifying for the quarter-finals alive.

Steven Donnelly is about to enter the ring for his welterweight bout

Can Steven Donnelly lift the spirits and keep his Olympic dream alive? After a pretty forgettable two weeks for the Irish boxing team, the 27-year-old enters the ring to face Byambyn Tuvshinbat in the next few minutes.

All to box for in the final round!

This is going to be a close one.

It was close, but Steven Donnelly earns the split decision to advance.

Shane Ryan finishes third in 50m freestyle heat

Shane Ryan finishes third in his heat in a time of 22.88 seconds. That’s not going to be enough to progress as the curtain comes down on his Olympic Games.

Seamus Power finishes his opening round level par

Not a bad start for the Waterford man, who lies in a tie for 27th on level par after the opening round.
