DORMANT, DESERTED AND derelict — one year on from the Rio Olympics, the iconic venues which will forever hold sentimental memories for thousands of athletes and spectators have been left abandoned and in ruin.
Organisers somehow managed to defy all odds in successfully hosting the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games in a city deep in financial recession, but the true cost has surfaced in the 12 months since.
The Barra Olympic Village is a ghost town with the venues which played host to some of the biggest sporting moments from last year now lying in a sorry state.
The Olympic Aquatics Stadium hasn’t been used since while the Maracana Stadium’s power has been cut off because of $930,000 in unpaid bills due to a dispute between the IOC and city of Rio.
Below are just a sample of photos which give some sort of indication as to the extent of the decay of the venues since the conclusion of the Paralympic Games last September.
