A former Arsenal player is being lined up as Sherwood's replacement at Villa - reports

David Moyes, Brendan Rodgers and Nigel Pearson are also believed to be on the club’s shortlist.

ASTON VILLA ARE understood to have identified Remi Garde as their preferred choice to succeed Tim Sherwood at the club.

After Sherwood’s departure was confirmed at the weekend, reports suggest Villa have targeted Garde for the vacant manager’s role.

The former France international’s only managerial experience thus far has come with Lyon — the club he took charge of between 2011 and 2014, winning the Coupe de France and the Trophée des champions during that period.

The 49-year-old has since taken a break from football, but is believed to now be the firm favourite to take over at Villa Park, with the club currently bottom of the Premier League table on four points.

Following stints at Lyon and Strasbourg, Garde signed for Arsenal in 1996 on the recommendation of Arsene Wenger (who had yet to be confirmed as manager at the time).

However, injury problems and the emergence of Patrick Vieira saw the experienced defensive midfielder’s game time restricted to just 31 appearances in three years for the Gunners, before retiring from the game after departing the London club in 1999.

David Moyes, Brendan Rodgers and Nigel Pearson are also believed to be on Villa’s shortlist as they their search for a third manager in eight months.
