Villarreal have prevented Real Madrid from breaking a La Liga record set by Barcelona

Los Blancos tasted victory 16 times in a row before the Yellow Submarine ended their amazing winning streak.

REAL MADRID’S INCREDIBLE La Liga run finally came to an end tonight against Villarreal, leaving them agonisingly close to toppling the mark set by Barcelona.

Zinedine Zidane’s men had won their last 16 outings in the league, a record shared by their Catalan rivals who achieved the feat in 2010-11.

But they were thwarted in their hopes of taking the milestone outright by the Yellow Submarine, who held the Champions League holders to a 1-1 draw at Santiago Bernabeu.

Bruno Soriano gave Villarreal the lead from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time but Sergio Ramos equalised for the hosts three minutes after the restart.

Despite dropping points, Real still sit pretty at the top of La Liga after five rounds, having picked up 13 points from a possible 15.

Barca can close the gap to a point with a win this evening at home to Atletico Madrid — a game which kicked off at 9pm.
