Despite winning the Champions League last season, current boss Carlo Ancelotti is expected to depart this summer after going out of Europe to Juventus and losing out to Barcelona in La Liga’s title race.
Benitez, formerly of Valencia, Liverpool and Chelsea, has spent the past two years at Napoli but looks set to leave Serie A in the coming weeks as his current deal expires.
The 55-year-old Spaniard is now favourite to replace Ancelotti at the club he played with as an academy player before joining the coaching staff and managing their youth and reserve teams. He also worked as Vicente del Bosque’s assistant before carving out a career elsewhere.
West Ham are believed to be interested in hiring Benitez as a successor to Sam Allardyce too.
