'I thought April Fools’ Day was the other week' - Preston boss on striker's Irish links

Joe Garner is in fine form, having managed 20 goals in League One this season.

PRESTON BOSS SIMON Grayson has cast doubt on star striker Joe Garner’s possible eligibility to represent Ireland at international level.

Garner, who has been impressive form for the club in League One, was recently linked to Martin O’Neill’s men, despite representing England at underage level, with the FAI understood to be looking into the player’s availability.

However, Grayson expressed doubt about the 27-year-old striker’s eligibility, telling the Lancashire Evening Post:

“I thought April Fools’ Day was the other week,” he said of the player who is currently joint top scorer in League One with 20 goals.

“It is something that I will ask Joe about but maybe it is one or two people clutching for a good striker, in form, to play for their country.

“If it is true, I’m sure Joe will have a decision to make.”

Preston look well placed for promotion from League One, as they currently sit second, five points ahead of MK Dons in third, with Garner recently rewarded for his fine form with the PFA fans’ player of the month in League One for March.
