Poyet leaves AEK Athens after landing La Liga role for next season

The former Sunderland boss has signed a two-year deal to take charge of Real Betis.

REAL BETIS HAVE announced the appointment of Gus Poyet as their new manager this evening.

Poyet will take over this summer on a two-year deal, replacing Juan Merino who — according to a press release from Betis — achieved their target this season, having been installed following the sacking of Pepe Mel in January.

Betis, who were promoted last year, are in 14th place in La Liga as they head into this weekend’s final game of the 2015/16 campaign at home to Getafe.

Poyet spent this season in charge of AEK Athens, guiding the club to a third place finish in the Greek Superleague, 31 points behind winners Olympiakos.

The former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder began his managerial career at Brighton, before moving on to Sunderland, where he was sacked after just under two seasons at the helm in March 2013.
