Player ratings: How the Boys in Green fared against Austria

On a day of mixed emotions, Ireland were ultimately forced to settle for a point.

Darren Randolph: Couldn’t have done much about the goal and made one fine save towards the end, having not had a lot to do for much of the game. 7

Cyrus Christie: Showed plenty of energy down the right as usual, but his final product was lacking all too often. 6

Kevin Long: Remarkably assured on his competitive debut, and couldn’t have done much about the goal. 7

Shane Duffy: Didn’t do much wrong and made his presence felt in both boxes. 7

Stephen Ward: Made one or two good defensive interceptions but looked nervy on the ball before being replaced by Daryl Murphy early in the second half. 6

Glenn Whelan: Tidied up well once or twice, but felt a bit redundant having him in midfield alongside Harry Arter. 5

Harry Arter: Never really got into the game in a midfield that lacked real balance before being replaced by Wes Hoolahan with 20 minutes remaining. 5

Jeff Hendrick: Had one or two bright moments, but struggled with the positions he was asked to play and was on the periphery of the game too often. 5

Robbie Brady: His set-piece delivery was poor and he looked sluggish for the most part. 5

James McClean: Showing plenty of energy and commitment as ever, but will be disappointed he couldn’t influence the game more. 6

Jon Walters: Took his goal extremely well and generally worked his socks off up front. 8

Subs: Daryl Murphy caused the Austrian defence plenty of problems with his aerial threat, while Wes Hoolahan and Aiden McGeady provided some much-needed nous to the side. 7

Martin O’Neill: Made a big call leaving Wes Hoolahan out and Ireland struggled to retain possession or offer much going forward in his absence. O’Neill deserves some credit though for making the second-half changes that ultimately enabled Ireland to earn a deserved point. 6
