IT WAS A solid start from Rory McIlroy in the opening round of the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.
Returning for the first time since sustaining an ankle injury which kept him out of the Open last month, the defending champion shot a -1 round of 71 which leaves him five strokes behind leader Dustin Johnson going into round two.
After such a lengthy lay-off, there was plenty for McIlroy to take encouragement from… including this superb shot from the water to the green to save par on the 5th.

“I got out okay,” McIlroy told Sky Sports. “I just remembered to hit it hard enough. My shoe got a little bit wet but thankfully they’re good and waterproof so it didn’t get through to the sock, so it was fine.”
