Massive blow for Munster as O'Mahony unlikely to return this season

Anthony Foley is not expecting to have his skipper back in time for the remaining games of the Pro12 campaign.

MUNSTER CAPTAIN PETER O’Mahony looks set to miss the rest of the season with the knee injury he sustained against France in the Rugby World Cup.

O’Mahony had hoped to return in time for the tail-end of the Guinness Pro12 season but it is now looking likely that the cruciate ligament injury will rule him out for longer than initially feared.

“We’ll see where he is in the next few weeks,” Munster coach Anthony Foley told TV3 News at 5.30.

“He’s doing a lot of hard work in the background but from our perspective we don’t see him wearing red again this season.

“We don’t want to put him back in only for him to get a setback somewhere else.

“It’s important that he goes through the return-to-play (process) and maybe (he will be out) a bit longer than we expected.”

Munster’s season is currently hanging in the balance as they sit in sixth spot on the table, five points off the play-off places, with three rounds of regulation fixtures to be played.

Their next task is a trip to the Sportsground to take on Connacht on Saturday night.
