International Paralympic Committee issues outright ban on Russian athletes for this month's Games

It represents a complete contrast to the International Olympic Committee’s heavily-criticised decision.

Updated 16.50, 7 August

THE INTERNATIONAL PARALYMPIC COMMITTEE has banned all Russian athletes from the 2016 Paralympic Games that take place later this month.

It represents a complete contrast to the International Olympic Committee’s decision to allow 70% of Russian athletes compete in Rio despite Richard McLaren’s remarkable Wada-commissioned report into the country’s state-sponsored doping practices

The Guardian reported yesterday that the IPC board had met with Russian officials during the week to hear their arguments after initially issuing a provisional suspension.

The move to go ahead and ban the nation serves to keep an unrelenting spotlight on the IOC after they chose to allow international federations decide if Russian athletes should compete in Rio.
