League of Ireland legend Owen Heary is back in management with Shelbourne

He succeeds Kevin Doherty at Tolka Park.

LEAGUE OF IRELAND legend Owen Heary will take the reins of his former club Shelbourne until the end of the season.

The 39-year-old, who has been without a job since leaving Sligo last year, has been initially appointed on a short-term deal following the departure of Kevin Doherty.

He takes over at Tolka Park with Shels third from bottom in the SSE Airtricity League First Division.

Heary won five league titles and a FAI Cup crown during his eight-year playing career at Shelbourne and is now tasked with reviving the club’s fortunes after a period in the doldrums.

The former defender retired in 2013 and after a short spell in charge of Bohemians, was appointed Sligo boss in October 2014.

His tenure at the Showgrounds was ill-fated, however, and Heary was sacked 12 months ago. He has been doing television work with Setanta Sports since.

Shelbourne welcome Cobh Ramblers to Tolka Park this Friday.
