O'Donovan brothers untouchable as Olympic silver medallists storm to national title

The Irish Open regatta took place this weekend.

IT CAME AS little surprise this afternoon that, in their first race together since winning Olympic silver together, Paul and Gary O’Donovan eased to national glory in Cork.

The Skibbereen pair won the doubles title at the Irish Open regatta, finishing strongly to cross the line six seconds ahead of second place at the National Rowing Centre.

Fellow Olympian Sanita Puspure won the women’s double alongside Emily Hegarty on the first weekend of the Irish rowing season.

Yesterday, Paul O’Donovan — a gold medallist at the World Rowing Championships a week after Rio — pipped his brother to win the A Final of the single sculls.
