Rams coach Jeff Fisher said the surgery took between four and six hours.
“Whether you’re a coach or you’re a father or you’re a family member, any time something like that happens it’s very, very difficult,” Fisher told reporters after Wednesday’s practice.
Bailey was shot in a drive-by on Tuesday night at a Miami Gardens home, which is not far from his hometown. There were three additional passengers in the vehicle, including two minors.
Police are investigating the incident but have yet to identify a shooter.
Bailey, who is from South Florida, returned home as he serves a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy earlier in November.
Fisher said he knew Bailey was in Florida.
“I knew he was working out and he was taking care of himself, and he was getting ready to help us win games when his suspension was concluded,” Fisher added.
Bailey – a third-round pick out of West Virginia – has 12 catches for 182 yards and a touchdown this season.
