JASON RYAN WAS left to ponder how his Kildare side managed to squander a three-point lead in the dying stages of today’s defeat to Down in Newbridge in Division Two of the Allianz Football League
Kildare were 1-15 to 1-12 clear entering the final seconds of normal time, but Down ran out four-point winners after a late scoring blitz which rocked the Lilywhites at St Conleth’s Park.
After an entertaining first half, Kildare led by 1-7 to 0-9 with their goal coming thanks to Niall Kelly. However, Down substitute Caolan Mooney netted in the 40th minute to put the sides on level terms.

Padraig Fogarty then had a Kildare penalty saved by Stephen Kane, who come on to replace the black-carded Michael Cunningham. A brilliant Darrach Mulhall point had Kildare three in front entering the final stages, but then the drama began.
When Paul Devlin’s free came back off the crossbar, Arthur McConville was on hand to punch the ball to the net. A Devlin point then followed to leave just one between the teams, before Donal O’Hare pounced for another Down goal which gave them a 3-13 to 1-15 win.

In Mullingar, Westmeath picked up their first win in League or Championship since 2013, as they defeated 13-man Laois by five points this afternoon.
A James Dolan goal late in the first half helped Westmeath in to a four-point interval lead, but Laois drew level in the 58th minute thanks to a point from corner-forward Evan O’Carroll.
However, the tie turned back in Westmeath’s favour three minutes later when Padraig McMahon was shown a second yellow card. Westmeath responded by closing out the game with five unanswered points.
Laois were reduced to 13 men with two minutes of normal time remaining when Brendan Quigley received a straight red card following an incident involving Westmeath captain Ger Egan.
