Newcastle deny making £20 million bid for James McCarthy - reports

The 25-year-old may still move before the transfer window closes on Wednesday

NEWCASTLE HAVE DENIED making a £20 million bid for James McCarthy, according to reports.

The midfielder, who is currently out of action with a groin injury, has been heavily linked with a move away from Everton, after new boss Ronald Koeman chose Gareth Barry and Idrissa Gueye ahead of him in central midfield for the club’s early Premier League matches.

Koeman has played down suggestions of McCarthy’s impending departure, though recent reports indicate the Ireland international has told Everton he wants to leave.

However, Newcastle is unlikely to be his destination, with Press Association reporting that the Magpies have denied making a £20 million bid for McCarthy, despite rumours to the contrary.

The 25-year-old may still move before the transfer window closes on Wednesday, however, with Leicester, Celtic, Sunderland and Crystal Palace among the clubs being linked with the player.

Nevertheless, one Ireland international who will line out for Newcastle this season is Daryl Murphy, after he completed his move to the club from Ipswich yesterday.
