As it happened: New Zealand v Samoa, International Rugby

We had minute-by-minute updates as the All Blacks warmed up for the Lions by walloping Samoa.

Good morning and welcome to The42‘s live coverage of New Zealand v Samoa in Eden Park, Auckland.

We don’t need an excuse to watch live international rugby with our cup of coffee on a Friday morning but if there’s one there, we’ll take it.

And with just eight days to go until the Lions’ first Test against the All Blacks, there’s plenty of interest in seeing just how Steve Hansen’s side shape up.

Kick-off is at 9am.

If you’re expecting a close contest here, we probably won’t get it – the bookies make New Zealand favourites to win by 37 points.

A wonderful spectacle at Eden Park as Samoa’s Siva Tau is met by the All Blacks’ Haka. We’re just about ready to go.

KICK OFF: Tusi Pisi gets us underway.

1 min: Good ground early on from Samoa as Leiua leads the way with a strong carry up the middle.

2 mins: 15 phases for Samoa in this first passage of play, and they’re up to within 10 yards of the All Blacks’ line.

3 mins: On the advice of the TMO, referee Mathieu Raynal has stopped play with Samoa on the All Blacks line. Ian Smith has spotted a neck roll by Levave on Ardie Savea. It’s a marginal call but the All Blacks get the penalty and clear their lines.

Great early pressure by Samoa, but disappointing to come away with no points on the board.

4 mins: Codie Taylor hits Retallick with his first lineout, but Beauden Barrett knocks the ball on as he takes it into contact. Leiua had his hands all over the ball as he tried to rip it away and forced the error. Samoa scrum.

6 mins: Solid scrum from Samoa and they pick off the back. Fotuali’i kicks it deep into All Blacks territory, but Ben Smith is there to cover across and tidy up.

7 mins: Smashing kick by Tim Nanai-Williams who finds touch inside the All Blacks 22. Perfectly judged. Plenty of encouraging signs from Samoa early on as the All Blacks get warmed up.

9 mins: Leiataua overthrows and misses his mark with the lineout, and the All Blacks have good field possession. Williams and Lienert-Brown combine well in midfield but the ball is lost forward. Back for an All Blacks penalty – and they’re going to the corner.

10 mins: Samoa defend the lineout well initially, but then collapse the maul and it’s another All Blacks penalty. They’ll take the scrum this time, about five metres out.

TRY! New Zealand 7-0 Samoa (Lienart-Brown, 13′)

The All Blacks lead – and it’s Anton Lienart-Brown who has their first try of the season. They get a little bit lucky here as Ardie Savea looked to have knocked the ball on as he tried to pick it from the back of the scrum, but the officials allowed play to continue.

Magnificent strength from Beauden Barrett to create the finish. He battled through three tacklers and wrestled enough space to pop it back to Lienart-Brown who touched it down.

16 mins – We’ve just seen another replay of that Savea incident. It should have been called as a knock on, and that’s a slice of luck that the All Blacks probably didn’t need.

16 mins – Albert Nikoro tries a penalty for Samoa from just inside his own half and while the direction is right, it’s a couple of yards short on distance.

19 mins – Brilliant by Ben Smith, who pounces on a grubber as Pisi tries to unlock the All Blacks defence. Barrett’s clearing kick goes straight into touch – it’s not the first unforced error the All Blacks have made in this opening quarter.

21 mins – Pisi tries another little chip, but again, Ben Smith is there to call the mark and clear. It’s straight back down into All Blacks territory – great positional kick by Tuala.

22 mins - Oh, what a chance for Samoa. Nanai-Williams makes a great break in midfield and Samoa have a man on the overlap out wide. Leiua rushes his pass though and overthrows it badly. That should have been a try.

24 mins – Again, Nanai-Williams tries to make something happen. He jinks and then runs at Barrett, and Samoa win the penalty for not rolling away. It’s a little bit closer than the last one…

25 mins – Nikoro tries his luck again and this one tails off to the left and wide.

26 mins - Beauden Barrett runs straight into Levave in midfield, and the loosehead Afatia is first man in and on his feet to force the turnover penalty.

28 mins – Chance here for Samoa…

TRY! New Zealand 14-0 Samoa (Barrett, 30′)

That’s sensational counter-attacking by the All Blacks to punish Samoa. Leiataua has men outside him but dawdles with the pass, and Ardie Savea does brilliantly to kill the move.

The All Blacks defence forces a turnover and Ben Smith brings it away. Sonny Bill Williams does brilliantly to gather up a bobbling ball and bring it in, and then drops it onto Beaudie Barrett’s boot. He wins the footrace to the line and dives to touch it down.

Barrett converts and, without impressing, the All Blacks have opened a comfortable lead.

TRY! New Zealand 21-0 Samoa (Ardie Savea, 34′)

Straight off the training ground as the All Blacks get their lines perfect from a scrum set piece. Samoa can hardly lay a hand on them and, in the end, it falls to Ardie Savea to apply the finish, diving in under the posts to leave Barrett with the easiest of his three conversions.

36 mins – Should have been another All Blacks try! They break but Brodie Retallick just can’t get his hands on the final pass from Israel Dagg.

38 mins – Another questionable decision from Mathieu Raynal who plays an incredibly long advantage in the All Blacks favour and then brings it back for a penalty. Five-metre scrum.

TRY! New Zealand 28-0 Samoa (Williams, 39′)

Smith picks the ball off the back of the scrum, hits Barrett, and he hits Williams who is charging in on a strong line. Easy.

HALF TIME: New Zealand 28-0 Samoa

TRY! New Zealand 35-0 Samoa (Dagg, 42′)

Magnificent stuff from Anton Lienart-Brown who breaks and manages to occupy three Samoan defenders before popping it off to Israel Dagg who races in to score.

Beauden Barrett faces his most difficult conversion of the day, and knocks it over with ease. Five out of five.

46 mins – Good defensive work from the All Blacks, and Sam Cane in particular at the breakdown, but when Lienart-Brown pounces on a loose ball, he does so from an offside start and it will be a penalty to Samoa.

48 mins – Nanai-Williams goes down in an attempt to dodge a tackle, and Brodie Retallick catches him around the neck. There didn’t appear to be any intent or negligence there but it’s still a Samoa penalty and a chance to kick into All Blacks territory.

49 mins – Absolutely thumping collision as Leiataua and Owen Franks run straight into each other. You’d know all about it if you were on the receiving end.

51 mins – Aaron Smith rips the ball away at the breakdown but then Codie Taylor knocks it on. Back for an All Blacks penalty – and we’re about to see some subs.

TRY! New Zealand 40-0 Samoa (Savea, 52′)

Brilliant team try, started and finished by Julian Savea. He makes a big line break, and so does Brodie Retallick – running through two would-be tacklers. The All Blacks recycle, and the finish is an easy one for Savea with three men outside. He’s the one that they all leave it for, and he’s now on 46 international tries, just three behind Dougie Howlett’s all-time record.

Charlie Faumuina, Scott Barrett and Wyatt Crockett are all on as those New Zealand subs. Paul Alo-Emile is on for Samoa.

TRY! New Zealand 47-0 Samoa (Taylor, 56′)

It’s try number seven for the ruthless All Blacks, but Samoa might be a bit disappointed that the officials didn’t stop play. They had a player down injured but Ben Smith cut them open and then set up Taylor for the finish.

TRY! New Zealand 54-0 Samoa (B Barrett, 59′)

They’re scoring tries faster than I can describe them at this stage. Barrett finishes in the corner, converts, and then heads off to put his feet up as Lima Sopoaga comes on. We won’t see the three Barretts on the pitch together tonight, though.

TRY! New Zealand 61-0 Samoa (Fifita, 62′)

Vaea Fifita is only five minutes into his All Blacks career and he’s already scored his first try. Great play by Scottie Barrett in the build-up, great footwork by Israel Dagg to open up the space, and great running by Fifita to choose the right line and get up in support on Dagg’s shoulder.

Sopoaga converts.

Jordie Barrett comes on to replace Ben Smith, and the Barrett family now have themselves a third All Black.

71 mins – Samoa have possession through eight or nine phases, but then Tim Nanai-Williams tries to find touch inside the 22. It’s snaffled up and cleared by the All Blacks.

TRY! New Zealand 66-0 Samoa (Perenara, 72′)

It’s a perfect 10 for the All Blacks, but really, Samoa have been out on their feet long before now. The All Blacks steal a lineout to start the move, Lima Sopoaga makes huge ground up the middle, and Perenara supplies the finish.

Sopoaga misses his conversion from out right.

TRY! New Zealand 73-0 Samoa (Ardie Savea, 75′)

Ahhh, it’s pure magic from New Zealand. Perenara starts the attack off the base of a scrum in midfield and, within seconds, they have another try.  The finish comes after a little bit of Perenara magic, dinking the ball up into the air for Savea to pounce and score.

Sopoaga converts.

TRY! New Zealand 78-0 Samoa (Cane, 79′)

Another one!

NO TRY!

Oh, that’s cruel! New Zealand run in one last try and, very unselfishly, TJ Perenara hands it to Lima Sopoaga on the line so that he can score his first Test try.

But the penultimate pass is checked by the TMO, and it’s ruled forward!

FULL TIME: New Zealand 78-0 Samoa

So, Lions fans… how are we feeling after that?

We’ll have more reaction from Murray Kinsella in Eden Park over the course of the morning but that’s all for now. We’re off to cry into our cup of coffee for a few minutes. Thanks for reading.
