Munster confirm signing of South African lock Kleyn on three-year deal

The 22-year-old will move to Limerick from the Stormers.

MUNSTER HAVE CONFIRMED the signing of South African lock Jean Kleyn on a three-year contract.

The 22-year-old will join the province from the Stormers next month.

6’8″ Kleyn has made a total of 18 appearances for the South African Super Rugby franchise since his debut in 2014, although a wrist injury earlier this season meant he played just once in the 2016 campaign. The Linden native won the Currie Cup with Western Province in 2014.

Kleyn will be eligible to play for Ireland at the end of his three-year contract.

He previously worked under new Munster defence coach Jacques Nienaber with Western Province and the Stormers, while Munster director of rugby Rassie Erasmus knows the 118kg second row well from his time with the SARU.

“Jean is a hugely exciting prospect and a great addition to the province,” said Erasmus of his new signing.

“I’ve seen his development first hand and with Jacques’ extensive knowledge of him we are all up to speed on how Jean can contribute to the squad. A naturally athletic player, we believe he will add further value to the pack and we look forward to welcoming him to Munster.”
