Welcome to Croke Park as we get set for the first of this year’s All-Ireland senior football quarter-final ties.

It’s Ulster champions Monaghan in action against Tyrone, who have come through the qualifiers with their latest victory arriving last Saturday against Meath.

Here’s the Monaghan team named to start today:

The weather has brightened up in Croke Park and we’re set for throw in.

First scoring chance to Tyrone but Martin Penrose slices his shot wide.

Interesting to see Conor Gormley picking up Monaghan’s Kieran Hughes while Cathal McCarron is on Conor McManus.

Monaghan 0-1 Tyrone 0-0: 2 mins – McCarron fouls McManus and the Clontibret man pops over the close range free.

Monaghan 0-2 Tyrone 0-0: 3 mins – Monaghan are flying early on here. Good counter-attack starting with goalkeeper Rory Beggan and the move culminates in Kieran Hughes swinging over a lovely point.

Monaghan 0-2 Tyrone 0-1: 4 mins – Fightback from Tyrone as Darren McCurry curls over a free.

Monaghan 0-3 Tyrone 0-1: 6 mins – Monaghan extend their lead through a McManus free.

Tyrone conceding plenty frees early on, latest for a foul on Dessie Mone.

Monaghan 0-4 Tyrone 0-1: 8 mins – And they are duly punished as Paul Finlay curls over the free from near the Cusack Stand with the ball going over via the upright.

Monaghan certainly don’t look early on as if they are resting on their laurels after their marvelous Ulster final success over Donegal.

Monaghan 0-4 Tyrone 0-2: 12 mins – Sean Cavanagh fires over a free for Tyrone. Referee Cormac Reilly is penalising fouls consistently that are being made off the ball by defenders close to goal.

Now Cathal McCarron in the Tyrone defence sees yellow for a hand trip on Conor McManus.

Monaghan 0-5 Tyrone 0-2: 16 mins – And Finlay duly obliges again for Monaghan as he points the free.

Soft looking free awarded to Tyrone there for a perceived foul by Darren Hughes on Sean Cavanagh. Hughes surprisingly sees yellow for the foul.

Monaghan 0-5 Tyrone 0-3: 17 mins – The Monaghan players and supporters aren’t happy but Darren McCurry blocks all that out to hold his nerve and kick over the free for Tyrone.

Monaghan 0-5 Tyrone 0-4: 18 mins – And suddenly the gap is down to one with Sean Cavanagh pointing after a trademark burst through the middle of the Monaghan defence.

Monaghan 0-5 Tyrone 0-5: 19 mins – Tyrone have quickly wiped out Monaghan’s lead. Conor Clarke confidently kicks between the posts after swift passing involving Sean and Colm Cavanagh created the chance.

Half a goal chance for Monaghan as Kieran Hughes stretches to connect with a high ball but he doesn’t get enough on his fisted effort and Tyrone clear to safety.

The rain is starting to come down now here in Croke Park.

Monaghan 0-6 Tyrone 0-5: 21 mins – Monaghan go back in front as Conor McManus steps on the accelerator on the right wing and clips over a lovely point.

For the first time today, Paul Finlay is off target with a placed ball as the Monaghan man shoots wide from a central position.

Monaghan 0-6 Tyrone 0-6: 24 mins – Magical stuff from Sean Cavanagh. He does his trademark shimmy when facing Darren Hughes and cuts in to swing over a beautiful point off his right foot. Draw match.

Tyrone 0-7 Monaghan 0-6: 26 mins – Tyrone edge in front courtesy of a fine point by Joe McMahon after great build-up play.

Tyrone 0-8 Monaghan 0-6: 28 mins – Sean Cavanagh is wreaking havoc once more for Tyrone. He bursts through the middle and blasts over another point. Monaghan need to get to grips with handling his threat.

Monaghan are bringing in Dick Clerkin to replace Dermot Malone.

It’s turning into a foul evening in Croke Park with the rain pouring down.

Tyrone 0-9 Monaghan 0-6: 30 mins – Tyrone’s long-range shooting has been exceptional so far. Joe McMahon with the latest effort that falls over the bar.

Scoring chance for Monaghan goes abegging as Dick Clerkin shoots wide. The rain is extremely heavy now at this stage.

Tyrone 0-9 Monaghan 0-7: 34 mins – Vital point for Monaghan from Conor McManus. They needed that after shipping four on the bounce.

How much are conditions going to dictate this game? Handling errors on both sides now on the greasy surface.

Both sets of players exchanging words as they make their way off the pitch. It looks a bit heated down there as the teams make their way to the Cusack Stand dressing rooms.

Sensational start to the second-half. We’re presuming that was for an incident as the teams made their way to the dressing room at the break.

Penrose was involved in an incident with Dessie Mone after the half-time whistle.

Monaghan interval change sees Christopher McGuinness come on for Padraig Donaghy.

Tyrone 0-9 Monaghan 0-8: 38 mins – Point by Stephen Gollogly for Monaghan but that really should have been a goal as he blazed over when straight through.

Mix up in Tyrone defence as Pascal McConnell’s short kick out is dropped by Cathal McCarron and Monaghan broke clear through Gollogly.

Monaghan 0-9 Tyrone 0-9: 40 mins – Dick Clerkin comes up trumps for Monaghan with a super long range point.

Tyrone’s shooting is off target early on in the second-half with Conor Gormley the latest to kick wide.

Tyrone 0-10 Monaghan 0-9: 45 mins – A boost that Tyrone needed. Peter Harte launches over a splendid point as the 14-man side go back in front.

Tyrone 0-11 Monaghan 0-9: 46 mins – Now it’s another Tyrone half-back who grabs a point. Brilliant score as well by Ciaran McGinley.

It looks like it was for a foul on Mark Donnelly.

Two Tyrone subs as well to tell you about. Paddy McNeice comes in for Joe McMahon and Aidan Cassidy replaces Darren McCurry.

Yellow card for Tyrone’s Sean Cavanagh after an incredibly cynical foul. Conor McManus had got past him and was baring down on goal before Cavanagh rugby tackled him to the ground.

Tyrone 0-11 Monaghan 0-10: 49 mins – McManus pops over the resultant free.

Tyrone 0-12 Monaghan 0-10: 51 mins – Matthew Donnelly skips clear of Colin Walshe and fires over a lovely point for Tyrone.

Big cheer from the Monaghan fans. That’s because Tommy Freeman is on the pitch as Paul Finlay makes way.

Two points in it, midway through the second-half. This is developing into a really edgy and spiteful affair.

Tyrone 0-12 Monaghan 0-11: 53 mins – Back to a one-point game thanks a score by Monaghan’s Christopher McGuinness.

Tyrone bring on Ronan O’Neill and Ronan McNabb while taking off Paddy McNeice and Stephen O’Neill.

We’re entering the last ten minutes as Tyrone lead narrowly.

Dick Clerkin boots wide as Monaghan press for a leveling score.

Great turnover by Monaghan by Christopher McGuinness who releases Dick Clerkin. He carries the ball forward with purpose before being dragged down by the Tyrone rearguard.

Tyrone 0-12 Monaghan 0-12: 62 mins – And Conor McManus steps up to convert the free and tie the teams.

Tyrone 0-13 Monaghan 0-12: 63 mins – But Tyrone go straight downfield and it’s substitute Ronan O’Neill who fires over a neat point off his left.

Tyrone’s last sub of the day sees Mark Donnelly come off and Plunkett Kane enter the game.

Tyrone’s Conor Clarke gets behind the Monaghan defence and blasts in a goal bound drive but the ball cannons off the bar. That could have been game, set and match to Tyrone.

Boos ring out around the stadium. The MOnaghan fans were deeply unhappy with some of referee Cormac Reilly’s decisions near the end of the game.

But Tyrone closed out this game in fine style on a day when both teams finished with 14 men after Martin Penrose and Kieran Hughes were sent-off.

Tyrone will play in the All-Ireland semi-final on August 25th while Monaghan can reflect on a year where they made huge progress in winning their first Ulster title in 25 years. The Monaghan team are currently being applauded off the pitch by their fans.
