We'll still call it the Millennium Stadium, won't we? David Davies

One of the world's most iconic stadiums is to be renamed as part of a sponsorship deal

The Millennium Stadium will be no more.

CARDIFF’S MILLENNIUM STADIUM will be known as the Principality Stadium from January after the Welsh Rugby Union announced a new 10-year sponsorship deal this afternoon.

The name change will take effect for next season’s Six Nations.

Opened in June 1999 at a cost of £121 million, the 74,500-seater arena is owned by a subsidiary of the WRU and has also hosted major football matches and pop concerts.

It will stage eight matches at this month’s Rugby World Cup including Ireland’s pool fixtures against Canada and France as well as the 2017 Champions League final.

“Both parties are comfortable with the arrangement,” said WRU chairman Gareth Davies. ”I think a 10-year deal is significant in terms of naming rights for a stadium.

“The stadium is an iconic landmark in Wales. The partnership with Principality will help the grass roots of the game.

The Welsh building society has worked with the WRU since 1969 and is currently the title sponsor of Welsh rugby’s top division.

Once the World Cup is over, a ‘major operation’ will commence to rebrand the venue in time for Wales’ opening Six Nations game against Scotland in February.
