Interim manager Mike Phelan offered Hull job on permanent basis

Ireland manager Martin O’Neill had been linked with the job.

MIKE PHELAN IS set to become Hull City’s new full-time manager after claiming he has been offered the position on a permanent basis.

The Tigers were tipped by many pundits to struggle at the start of the new season due to the uncertainty surrounding the manager’s position since Steve Bruce departed the club in July, as well as the lack of summer signings.

But it looks like Phelan is set for his first senior managerial role after a positive start to the season.

“It’s a case now of sifting through the offer and getting down to what hopefully will be further discussions,” the club’s former assistant manager told BBC Radio Humberside.

Seven points from their opening four Premier League games back in the top flight ensured the 53-year-old had the backing of the Hull supporters for the job, with their only loss so far this season coming against his former club Manchester United, and the signing of the contract is believed to be close.

“I don’t want to talk about the money, I don’t want to talk about what the contract entails because to be frank it’s nobody else’s business.

“You do want parity with the Premier League and going forward hopefully that’s what will happen.

“I would like to have got it done weeks ago but it’s only in this last 24 hours we’ve ended up in this state of affairs with pounds, shillings and pence,” Phelan said.

The last minute captures of David Marshall, Ryan Mason and Will Keane boosted Hull’s depleted squad just days before the summer window closed, after the club failed to sign a senior player before the start of the Premier League campaign.

Despite the club still up for sell, Phelan is still confident of getting the deal over the line.

“There’s still the takeover in the background and I find myself in the middle of that, trying to sort out my future. I don’t know who is involved any more and how far discussions have gone. It is possibly a frustrating thing from my point of view.”

Ireland manager Martin O’Neill, who has yet to sign an extended contract with the FAI, had been linked with the managerial position at the KCOM Stadium.
