Ireland's Michaela Walsh qualifies for EU Championships final and guarantees a silver medal

The Antrim native will now fight for gold in Saturday’s final.

MICHAELA WALSH IS guaranteed at least a silver medal after securing her place in the bantamweight final at the EU Championships in Italy earlier today.

The Antrim native got the better of her Swedish opponent, Helena Envall, to book her place in Saturday’s decider.

There she’ll meet a familiar face: Germany’s Azize Nemani, who Walsh previously fought and beat in an international round robin back in 2014.

Elsewhere on Wednesday, Dervla Duffy suffered defeat in her featherweight quarter-final bout with Ornella Wahner and missed out on a medal.

Tomorrow is a rest day but Friday sees two more Irish fighters in the ring.

Lightweight Kellie Harrington and welterweight Grainne Walsh will both try and follow Walsh’s lead and secure at least a silver medal when they take on Irma Testa and Sandy Ryan in their respective semi-finals.
