Michael O'Reilly becomes the 8th Irish boxer to qualify for Rio 2016

And he’s guaranteed a bronze at the World Qualifier in Baku.

IRISH MIDDLEWEIGHT BOXER Michael O’Reilly has booked his place at Rio 2016 after victory in the quarter-finals of the World Olympic qualifiers in Baku.

He becomes the eighth Irish boxer to qualify for this summer’s Games after defeating Azerbaijan’s Shinebayor Narmandakh this afternoon.

O’Reilly, who won gold at the European Championships last year, joins Paddy Barnes, Brendan Irvine, Michael Conlan, David Oliver Joyce, Steven Donnelly, Joe Ward and Katie Taylor on the team for Rio.

He is now guaranteed a bronze in Baku and will be back in the ring tomorrow afternoon for his semi-final bout.
