Northern Ireland goalkeeper earns Championship move after Euro 2016 heroics

Following an impressive showing this summer in France, Michael McGovern is heading for Norwich City.

NORTHERN IRELANDโ€™S EURO 2016 hero Michael McGovern has joined Norwich City on a three-year deal.

Goalkeeper McGovernโ€™s Hamilton Academical contract expired at the end of last season and he had been tipped to join Rangers, but a string of impressive displays in France โ€” most notably against Group C giants Germany โ€” attracted interest from elsewhere.

The 32-year-old now heads to Carrow Road, linking up with former Hamilton manager Alex Neil, as the Canaries look to bounce back from last seasonโ€™s Premier League relegation.

โ€œHaving worked with the gaffer before, that was a big pull for me,โ€ McGovern told Norwichโ€™s official website. โ€I had some interest from elsewhere but Iโ€™m really looking forward to working with him again now at Norwich. Itโ€™s nice to join a club where Iโ€™ll have some familiar faces around me.

โ€œIโ€™m aiming to get into the team but I know Iโ€™m up against some top-class goalkeepers. Itโ€™s going to be intense competition, although itโ€™s a challenge Iโ€™ll relish.

โ€œI want to play but also I want to help the younger players coming through as much as I can. Thatโ€™s something Iโ€™ve looked to do at my previous clubs, and Iโ€™ll look to lend my experience wherever possible.โ€

Clearly nothing has been learnt from giving Eddie Oโ€™Sullivan a new contract prior to the World Cup.
