Setback for Kilkenny as Fennelly suffers Achilles tendon injury in Semple showdown

Bad news for the 2011 Hurler of the Year.

KILKENNY CELEBRATED PROGRESSION to another All-Ireland senior hurling final tonight but victory may have come at a cost with Michael Fennelly suffering a major injury setback.

Fennelly pulled up as he surged into the Waterford defence while in possession in the 59th minute of the semi-final replay in Semple Stadium.

Manager Brian Cody confirmed afterwards that Fennelly had suffered an Achilles tendon injury, yet did not rule him out of the All-Ireland decider next month as the injury is still to be properly assessed.

However the serious nature of the injury is likely to see Fennelly set for an extended spell on the sidelines.

The 2011 Hurler of the Year has had his share of injury travails in recent seasons, and has been particularly hampered by a long-standing back problem.

This latest injury could be a major setback in the career of the 31 year-old Ballyhale Shamrocks club man, who made his senior championship debut for Kilkenny in 2006.
