Grim photo of Rory McIlroy's ankle explains exactly why he missed the Open

The world’s number one golfer is on the mend, however.

RORY McILROY WAS unable to defend his Open title at St Andrews last month due to injury. Having seen his latest social media offering, it’s no surprise that the world’s number one golfer was forced to withdraw from the tournament.

McIlroy damaged his ankle during a game of football with friends, one of whom may have been Nigel de Jong, if this photo is anything to go by.

The 26-year-old shared the grim pic on Instagram this morning, in which his ankle itself resembles a football — albeit a size four. Fortunately for those of you hoping to see McIlroy defend his USPGA Championship title next week, the snap is four-and-a-half-weeks-old. A week later, the bruising was pretty nasty too.

McIlroy also used Instagram yesterday to let us know that his rehabilitation appears to be well on track.
