A MOMENTOUS DAY for Irish sailing just got even better thanks to a stunning race win by 49er pair Matt McGovern and Ryan Seaton.
The pair had produced disappointing results earlier in the day, finishing 19th in race 10 and 20th in race 11, but they saved their best for last as they claimed the win in race 12 to book their place in Thursday’s medal race.
Their results today see them drop one spot overall to eighth, with the top 10 pairs making the medal race.

The dominant Kiwi pair of Peter Burling and Blair Tuke have already wrapped up the gold in that class with the medal race to spare.
The German pair are currently in second on 67 points with Australia three points further back on 70.
Great Britain, Denmark, France and Argentina are also ahead of the Irish who are 33 points off the bronze medal position on 103 points.
There wasn’t such good news for the women’s 49er FX pair of Saskia Tidey and Andrea Brewster however, as they finished in 12th spot overall following their three races today and will miss out on their medal race.
The duo came home in eighth position in race 10 before finishing in 13th in race 11 and 12th in race 12, which wasn’t good enough to get them into the top 10.
