A contrasting start to the 2016 Allianz football league for Dublin and Mayo last weekend. On Saturday night, Dublin were worthy winners by 2-14 to 0-14 against Kerry in Croke Park. On Sunday afternoon, Mayo travelled to Páirc Uí Rinn and were summarily dismissed by 1-18 to 0-12 by Cork.

Will life get better for Mayo tonight or will Dublin heap more misery upon them? It’s a repeat of last year’s All-Ireland senior football semi-final two-game saga.

Jim Gavin’s side have a one-point lead at the interval but the home fans will be happy with their lot considering the wariness at which they welcomed the All-Ireland champions on the back of last Sunday’s hiding against Cork.

Conditions aren’t great for football but the slight advantage at the midway mark is with Dublin.

Evan Regan has a chance to bring Mayo level from a free but he can’t find his range. Coupled with Jason Doherty’s miss in the first-half from a placed ball, these are reminders of how valuable Cillian O’Connor is to this Mayo side. The problem is injury will see him out for much of this league campaign.

Big talking point there. The home fans aren’t happy with a free being awarded against Aidan O’Shea, who was surrounded by a bunch of Dublin players as he gathered close to goal. They felt it should have been a free in for the Breaffy man.
